In Vitro Fertilization is an assisted reproductive technology abbreviated as IVF.
IVF is nothing but a manual fertilization using an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish and then putting the embryo back into the uterus.
IVF is generally used for the following conditions:-
- Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes

- Male factor infertility including decreased sperm count or sperm motility

To stimulate egg production, medications are prescribed. The aim is to collect multiple eggs because some eggs might fail for the purpose. To examine the ovaries, Transvaginal ultrasound is used. To check hormone levels, blood test samples are taken.
A hollow needle is guided through the pelvic cavity to remove eggs. This process uses ultrasound imaging. To reduce and remove discomfort, medication is provided.
For combining with the eggs, the male is asked to give a sperm sample.
And in a process called insemination, the eggs and the sperm are mixed and stored towards fertilization. Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI may be used where there is a lower chance of fertilization. Here, a sperm is injected into the egg directly in an attempt towards fertilization. Monitoring is done to see that fertilization and cell division are occurring. Once this occurs, the eggs are referred to as embryos.
- Usually, the embryos are put into woman’s uterus 3 to 5 days after egg retrieval and fertilization. To transfer the embryos, a small tube is inserted into the uterus. This procedure for most is painless. Implantation typically happens around 6 to 10 days after egg retrieval if the procedure is successful.
