Principle of IVF and Egg Donation

The fact about egg donation is that it is an IVF cycle for two:

The Egg donor: Undertakes the first part of IVF, including ovarian stimulation & egg retrieval

The Recepient: Experiences the embryo transfer.

The strategy is to coordinate the two women’s cycles and this is achieved by a mixture of birth control pills & Hormonal Medication -Lupron.

Once the cycle starts, the donor uses the normal stimulatory medications-Recombinant FSH used during other fertility treatments, whereas the recepient takes a mixture of estrogen and progesterone to prepare her uterine lining for the Embryo transfer. When the donor’s eggs are developed, she undergoes follicle aspiration by the standard trans-vaginal ultrasound-guided technique under local or General Anaestheisa the recipient’s partner offers the sperm and fertilization takes place in the laboratory as with standard IVF.

Embryo transfer is usually arranged for day 5 (blastocyst) unless indicated otherwise. After the embryo transfer is finished, the recipient takes estrogen and progesteron through the end of the first trimester of pregnancy. Other aspects of the egg donation cycle are basically equal to those of standard IVF. Egg donation is very clearly the most successful fertility procedure that is available. This is due to a combination of young eggs, best preparation of both donor and recipient, and careful harmonization between donor and recipient.
