Ovarian reserve is defined as the capacity of the ovary to produce oocytes that are capable of fertilization, resulting in a healthy and successful pregnancy.

The antral follicle count is a test that measures your ovarian reserve. Antral follicle count is a transvaginal ultrasound study, performed in the early phase of a woman’s menstrual cycle, in which the doctor visually counts the number of egg-containing follicles that are developing on both of your ovaries.

Antral follicles are tiny structures that measure just 2 mm to 10 mm wide – that can be viewed by ultrasound very early in your menstrual cycle. A high number of antral follicles indicates that the ovaries will likely respond well to ovarian stimulation, increasing the chances of pregnancy.

Antimullerian hormone (AMH) is another test of ovarian reserve.
