All about Infertility and More
Infertility is a medical condition wherein the couple is unable to conceive even after 12 months of regular sexual relationship without birth control regulations. An estimated one in eight couples across most parts of the world are said to have difficulty in conceiving, which shows that infertility is on the increase.
FERTILIZATION PROCESS
This process involves conceiving of egg by the woman. For that the woman’s egg (also called ovum) released from an ovary when she ovulates, has to be combined with her man’s sperm.
HOW THEY OCCUR?
Woman’s ovum takes between 12 and 16 days from the start of her last period wherein she has a consistent monthly cycle of 28-30 days. Then the ovum travels down a Fallopian tube to the middle of the womb (uterus) over 12-24 hours.
Man’s sperm lodges itself near the neck of the womb (cervix) when he ejaculates during sex. Then the sperm travels past the cervix to lodge itself into the main part of the uterus, and then into the Fallopian tubes.
Once enough sperm lodges itself in the Fallopian tubes, then it combines (fertilize) with the ovum to produce an embryo, which is tiny and travels down into the uterus and attaches itself to the uterus’s lining. Later the tiny embryo grows and matures into a baby.
CAUSES OF INFERTILITY
IN WOMEN
- Issues with Ovulation: This involves not enough production of eggs, a problem that affects about 3 in 10 couples. The reasons for the same include:
- Early (premature) menopause.
- Hormonal problems
- Excess of weight or too little of weight.
- Excess of exercise which affects the hormone balance which in turn affects ovulation.
- Long-term illnesses like uncontrolled diabetes, cancers and kidney failure.
- Fallopian tube, cervix or womb problems that results from:
- Endometriosis, which involves tissue that normally lines the womb, found outside the uterus. It gets trapped in the pelvic area and can affect the ovaries, uterus, and nearby structures.
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) which can cause scarring and damage which in turn can affect fertility.
- Previous surgery to the Fallopian tubes, cervix or uterus.
- Presence of large fibroids.
IN MEN
- Testicles that do not produce any sperm or produce too little sperm. There are some who are born without testes or without a vas deferens.
- Problem with the sperm which occurs due to an unknown cause. Such a sperm may be in less numbers or less mobile or abnormal in their form.
The causes for poor or inferior sperm production could be anything from current or past infection of the testes (e.g., mumps) OR Tumors of the testes OR Testes that have failed to descend properly OR side-effects of certain medicines OR hormone problems.
