EFFECT OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION ON FERTILITY!
Effect of Environmental Pollution on Fertility !
Environmental pollution is the major cause of infertility as per recent studies with environmental pollutants like PCBs ( perchlorinated biphenyls ), pesticides and other toxic industrial compounds causing a decrease in fertility rate as higher as 29%. There is a direct link between pollution and reduced conception rate as per fertility/health experts.
Women and reduced conception rate-
Researchers have found that women who are exposed to higher levels of environmental pollutants have shown little success or are unsuccessful in achieving pregnancy even after undergoing infertility treatment when compared with those breathing fresh air.
Researchers have also examined the records of women who underwent multiple IVF cycles and used the district level pollution monitoring data to estimate each woman’s average exposure to chemicals like nitrogen, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and other per hour to see the effects of pollution during the IVF treatment.
After examining the effects of these pollutants at each stage of the IVF process beginning from ovarian stimulation to retrieval of the eggs and finally embryo transfer, it was found that exposure to pollutants during the first and third phases of IVF is directly linked with loss of pregnancy.
Latest experiments on the environmental pollution on fertility-
The latest experiment was conducted by a group of scientists from the National Institute of Health to look at the various pollutants and their probable effects on the rate of pregnancy and to understand the effects of harmful compounds on women’s reproductive health and on male and female infertility. This experiment was conducted on 500 couples who were restrained from using contraception for about a year or until they conceived whichever happened first.
The study involved taking blood samples to check the traces of 63 pollutants like PCBs with every couple being handed over a kit that helped them monitor fertility related hormones along with their diet and other lifestyle patterns on a day-to-day basis. At the end of the study, the researchers evaluated the levels of chosen environmental chemicals in the blood and the approximate time it took the couples to reach pregnancy. It was found that for the increase in each unit of blood, the concentration of as many as 12 pollutants was linked with an estimated 17-29 percent decrease in the likelihood of achieving pregnancy. This relationship was remarkable even after adjusting for the effects of BMI, smoking and aging factors that primarily affect fertility.
Therefore, people should be aware of the harmful effects that environmental pollutants have on achieving pregnancy through the IVF process. They should limit the exposure to toxic pollutants to have successful IVF. We at KIC Hyderabad as reputed infertility clinic offers complete guidance to women struggling with infertility providing various treatment options that also include IVF.
