Surrogacy-Kiran Infertility center:
Surrogacy has now become one of the important methods of Assisted Reproductive Technique (ART) that is attaining popularity the world over. Surrogacy has become rather a necessity than an option and couples are opting for surrogacy as the method of having their own baby. Surrogacy consists of two types, the first one is the straight or traditional surrogacy and the second one is popularly known as Gestational surrogacy. Each of these types of surrogacy is explained briefly for those who are interested to know about surrogacy.
Traditional Surrogacy :
Traditional surrogacy is a less popular method of artificial insemination in which a traditional surrogate (woman) is artificially inseminated with the father’s sperm. It is the least expensive form of surrogacy where the surrogate mother uses an insemination kit to become pregnant using the intended father’s semen. She then carries the baby and delivers it for the parents. A traditional surrogate is the baby’s biological mother. The father’s sperm fertilizes her egg. Traditional surrogacy can also be undertaken at home even though some people prefer to use a clinic for artificial insemination. Traditional surrogacy Is however now outdated and is not allowed in India
Gestational Surrogacy :
Gestational surrogacy through In vitro fertilization (IVF) makes it a possibility of harvesting eggs from the mother or egg donor, fertilize them with sperm from the father and then placing the embryo into the uterus of the gestational surrogate. The surrogate mother then carries the baby until birth. A gestational surrogate has no genetic ties with the child as it was not her egg that was used therefore a gestational surrogate is also called the “birth mother”. The biological mother is still that woman whose eggs were fertilized.
Gestational surrogacy is more complicated physically and is more expensive than traditional surrogacy. Nevertheless, gestational surrogacy has become a more common method than a traditional surrogate has. In India, it is estimated that about 500 babies are born each year using gestational surrogacy. A few surrogates usually prefer this method, as they may not be comfortable with using their own eggs in surrogacy. Overall, there are three stages to ‘gestational’ surrogacy and these include-
- Egg donation wherein the egg donor undergoes special treatment or procedure to extract from her large number of eggs.
- Fertilization wherein the egg or eggs is fertilized with semen in the laboratory
- Transfer the fertilized egg into the womb of the surrogate mother. This fertilized egg can be transferred either to the surrogate ‘fresh’ or after having defrosted from egg storage. The fresh egg transfer is successful only when monthly cycle of surrogate and the egg donor is synchronized through hormone medication.
