Laparoscopic surgery, often called minimally invasive or keyhole surgery, is a advanced surgical technique that allows our surgeons to diagnose and treat many gynecological conditions. This approach has revolutionized women’s healthcare, making procedures safer and recovery times much faster than traditional open surgery.
During laparoscopic surgery, our surgeon makes a very small incision near your navel and inserts a slender, telescope-like instrument called a laparoscope. This instrument allows us to see your abdominal and pelvic organs clearly, including your uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Today, approximately 95% of gynecological procedures that once required large abdominal incisions can be performed laparoscopically, often as same-day or one-day procedures.
Laparoscopy helps us diagnose and treat various conditions that may not be visible through physical exams, X-rays, or ultrasound alone. These include:
For Infertility Evaluation – Laparoscopy helps us identify causes of infertility that other tests might miss. We can check if your fallopian tubes are open by injecting a colored fluid through the uterus and observing if it flows freely through the tubes.
For Endometriosis and Pelvic Adhesions – Endometriosis occurs when uterine-like tissue grows outside the uterus, causing pain especially during menstruation or intercourse. During laparoscopy, we can precisely remove this tissue and separate adhesions (scar tissue that binds organs together) to relieve your symptoms.
For Ovarian Cysts – When ovarian cysts cause pain, infertility, or menstrual disorders, laparoscopy allows us to remove non-cancerous cysts while preserving healthy ovarian tissue.
For Ectopic Pregnancies – In cases where a pregnancy develops outside the uterus, laparoscopy allows us to locate and remove the ectopic pregnancy, often while preserving the fallopian tube to protect your future fertility.
Although laparoscopy requires anesthesia and involves some temporary discomfort during recovery, it is generally very safe with a short recovery period—usually less than a week. Most women return to their normal activities quickly compared to traditional open surgery.
